LinkedIn, as the leading professional social network, also has a vital part to play for both recruiters and jobseekers.

Kim Jamieson, Relationship Consultant at Grovelands, says “LinkedIn is a great resourcing tool as it facilitates building of networks, getting introductions to new people and keeping updated with what’s going on in the market.”

Despite Grovelands’ achievements with LinkedIn, we have had mixed success with other social platforms.

David Leen, Director, says “Facebook became a confused way to present us within a personal life framework.” However, since this time, it has been identified as ideal for Grovelands Graduate Recruitment, as 18-24 year old users constitute the largest single age demographic on Facebook.

“We had better success using Twitter,” added David, “however it developed into more of an intranet for our employees to interact with each other – which is still an interesting progression.”

The Grovelands LinkedIn group serves two purposes: it is used for regular discussions around careers and recruitment, the economy and so on – both with internal staff and external LinkedIn users. You’re invited to join us!

We asked David Leen: Should recruiters use social media information in the hiring process?

David suggests “I think if they’re going onto sites like Facebook to try and assess them through their personal lives and what they do, that should be of little consequence. I come back to the way that we’ve always hired which is that you’re looking at someone’s ability to do a job”.
