It’s time to start thinking like a professional and not like a student! Here are some helpful tips on where to start this summer…

Get your CV up to scratch

  • For help and advice on formatting your CV, have a look at our fantastic blog post.
  • Applying for hundreds of jobs online with no response is common. The more formatting your CV has, the more likely it is to hit a spam box and never actually be received. Keep it simple, no photographs or added detail on CVs. Follow up your CVs with a phone call to check it has been received.

Use social media

  • Develop your online profile or presence. Start with LinkedIn. Make the mental and written transition from student to professional, graduate job seeker. Take a look at your profile, what does it say about you? The experience content is not going to have a lot at the moment, but that doesn’t matter. It’s how you portray yourself with what you do have which is important.
  • Start researching companies and people and then identify a wish list of individuals you’d like to connect with, or make contact with industry professionals on LinkedIn. See if there’s anyone in your primary network (1st connections) who could introduce you. Look to family friends and see if anyone can offer you advice or assistance via LinkedIn.
  • Assess your current position and then decide your plan of action. Are you ready to enter the (graduate) job market now, or do you need a little more time to develop your skills and get experience?
  • Use Twitter as a professional tool, not just a social one. Identify key people and influencers, find out what they’re saying and join the conversation. However, do be aware that all your Twitter posts, personal and professional say a lot about you, so make sure you are more cautious about how you are portraying yourself from now on!
  • Are you following the right people and companies on Twitter and Facebook? Use appropriate careers and jobs hashtags to help manage your search. Make sure you follow our graduate recruitment account for more help and advice!

Prepare yourself

  • Assess your current position and then decide your plan of action. Are you ready to enter the (graduate) job market now, or do you need a little more time to develop your skills and get experience?
  • Grow your commercial awareness. It’s essential! Read a quality newspaper every day, download news apps and keep up to date with the topical financial news. Even a broad contextual understanding can help. But for more specific, sector based content make the most of Google alerts and RSS feeds. Try the BBC News app, Reuters, Bloomberg apps etc. Don’t forget to read our news feed too!
  • Practical experience is best. Internships, work placements and volunteering can all expose you to the commercial realities of running a business or organisation. Even part-time jobs can generate useful experience – you can learn a surprising amount from retail and bar work, so if you find yourself in a ‘filler job’ for a while, make the most of it.
  • Start investing in a work wardrobe. You are going to need key pieces for interviews anyway, so make a start. Nobody expects a graduate to have an extensive variety of suits and boots! However, a few staple pieces such as a suit and good shoes will stand you in good stead to begin with. Once you are earning, look to purchase additions to your wardrobe monthly with each salary payment. Build it up slowly.
  • Set yourself some realistic and manageable goals. Don’t get down hearted. Job seeking can take time and is unlikely to happen over night, but you will find a role with the right strategy. The hidden job market is found through networking and communication, the more people you communicate with there the more chances you create.
