Matt Tarran talks about changes to EU policy on data privacy, and what that means to UK businesses who’ll be making changes to stay compliant.
Data Privacy and Information Security is a necessary consideration for every business. The internet, new technologies and the way information is stored and shared has altered the use, visibility and accessibility of information affecting every industry from banking to social media. The introduction of the cookie notification and storage on websites is a good example.
There are increased concerns around the handling and sensitivity of data in turn affecting the value of information and the laws protecting it. This also gains the attention of the media and this attention again affects the value of information and the reputation of organisations.
The proposed European-wide Data Protection Regulation (currently in review) should mean less ambiguity and greater clarity when it comes to being compliant and breaches but there is much debate around the proposal and its effects. It will impact on business and assessments will need to be made on methods of data control, storage, staffing and IT systems.
