The date was Tuesday September 13th.  The weather was fair.  The atmosphere in the Grovelands’ office was saturated with excitement, for this Tuesday was to be like no other; the Grovelanders were being set loose into the world to experience some culture in the form of wine tasting at Ridgeview wine estate.

The clock struck 2pm, the computers were turned off and with a hop and skip (that somehow took twenty minutes) we were all sitting comfortably on the coach waiting to depart from Brighton and delve into the beauty of the Sussex Downs.  Finally we were off!

We were greeted at Ridgeview by beautiful surroundings, glorious sunshine and our tour guide, Ridgeview’s general manager, Tamara Roberts.  Our quest to become wine connoisseurs had begun! In the vineyards we were told of the measures taken to ward off frost and the delicate procedures involved in hand picking each grape and looking out across the expanse of the vineyard this seemed like no easy feat.  We were also shown around the huge machinery that is involved in the process of making wine, including a large presser that could press up to four tonnes of grapes in one go!

After we’d learnt about all things related to the process of the art of wine making it was finally time for the most anticipated part of the day…the actual wine tasting.  After Tamara had talked us through the finesse of the tasting technique we were presented with the Bloomsbury, the first of four exquisite sparkling wines that we had the pleasure to “critique”.  After the Bloomsbury our palettes were tickled with a South Ridge and a Cavendish sparkling wine; both were much appreciated, with the South Ridge proving to be a strong favourite amongst many of the Grovelanders.  Our last wine was the Fitzrovia and we were reliably informed that at the last state dinner the Queen and Barack Obama were treated to a vintage Fitzrovia.  Only the best for the Grovelands team!

Confident that we had all achieved wine connoisseur status, we headed back to Brighton to be treated to a fabulous slap up dinner at Côte.
