This week Grovelanders came together this week to battle it out through baking, raising over £150.00 in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. There were pretty praline pleasers, scrumptious gluten free carrot cakes, and gorgeous chocolate owls — but who was crowned Grovelands 2012 Bake-Off Champion?
After a summer of watching the talented bakers on the BBC whipping up gingerbread towers, fondant fancies and all sorts of baked delights, we were often left tantalising over their creations and discussing their techniques the next morning at work!
Always up for a challenge, we decided to put our own culinary skills to the test by launching our very own Grovelands Great British Bake-Off in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust who actively support excellence in research and clinical care, and also provide support and advice to people living with the illness here in the UK.
We had a month to submit our designs to the Bake-Off Wall. Meanwhile our resident Cake Maker Rosie Clowser was branded chief judge, roping in Anda Barnett – known for laying down the law in Contract and Compliance – and Kieran Ives – the head of BR with a sweet tooth – to assist her as our very own Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.
Nine brave Grovelanders competed for the title of “Star Baker”. We all crowded round the kitchen whilst the judges sampled each masterpiece and separated the even bakes from the soggy bottoms. They scored each creation based on decoration, taste and creativity. With highlights including Xenia’s Gluten free bright green carrot cake, appealing to our ‘Green’ ethos, and Dan B’s Praline Pleaser.
The rest of the company could hardly wait to tuck in, and slices were sold in order to raise money for our worthy cause. Once we could eat no more, Relationship Managers Matt Roff and Kim Jamieson headed off to other offices in the building, showcasing their sales abilities with a tray load of cake.
The results were in and after some tense discussions between the judges, Oliver Doodson’s warm Oreo cookie cake was not only a favourite with the office but was also awarded third place. Laura Heap’s fantastic owl cake flew her into the second spot, whilst Amanda’s fresh elderflower and lemon masterpiece was crowned as the star bake!
In total, we were able to raise £152.47 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, and we would like to thank everyone who participated and purchased cake for their amazing efforts!
