Learning & Development is at the top of our agenda here at Grovelands, so we’re delighted to announce that we’ve been nominated for the ‘Award for Excellence in Learning and Development’ at the Personnel Today Awards.
It’s been a fantastic month for Grovelands, as we are now celebrating being nominated for not just one award… but two!
This time it’s the fantastic work our internal HR function are doing that’s been recognised, as we’ve been shortlisted in the ‘Award for Excellence in Learning & Development’ category of the Personnel Today Awards 2015.
We’re all really excited to be included in the shortlist, and have our fingers crossed for a win at the ceremony held in November.
Below, head of HR Helen Walpole, details just some of the Learning & Development initiatives her and her team have been working on.
Learning & Development (L&D) is at the top of our agenda at Grovelands. By investing in developing our people, we are creating a highly engaged and happy workforce who are able to enhance their skills and progress with us.
We have introduced a levels based programme, creating paths from trainee consultant through to senior or managing consultant and beyond. Trainees can expect to receive an internal programme to progress them to consultant level within 6-12 months.
Consultants will then receive a programme consisting of internal and external classroom training spanning two years. The skills they acquire will then enable them to progress along the routes of senior consultant, or managing consultant if they are interested in and show potential to manage a small team. Anyone with line management responsibility will participate in the Leadership Development Programme, which is delivered by a reputable external provider.
In a newly developed performance review process, with an emphasis on the Personal Development Plan (PDP) element, everyone has the opportunity to identify any learning needs. Their manager can then work with them to consider what support and development they need.
We use the information obtained in our PDPs to inform our blended L&D plans. Employees can access internal training and workshops; they can attend action learning sessions where groups share challenges and how they’ve overcome them; they can identify a mentor to work with them by sharing experiences and best practice; they can buddy up with someone; they can shadow more experienced colleagues on client visits, business development meetings and calls; they can attend webinars and seminars; and they can apply to undertake professional qualifications in recruitment or other specialisms.
We also recognise that, where the next career move isn’t immediately obvious, growth and development within the current role with the opportunity to keep learning is available.
Our L&D efforts are not solely focused on the recruitment delivery side – the contract compliance team and all support teams have training journeys, and are able access a library of blended learning options too. They, too, for example, can apply for professional qualifications such as CIMA and CIPD, and attend internal external courses. Again, their PDPs help define their L&D needs.
This huge focus on L&D is evolving us into a learning organisation – we are all learning from one another from our internal training resource, and from external training.
We believe in continuous improvement, so we won’t sit still with our L&D – we will continue to review PDPs and carry out analysis of needs; we will review our internal offering and external provisions; we will seek to use technology where applicable and useful; and we will continue learning from one another within our organisation.
