KIVA is a non-profit organisation that aims to link supporters through lending to relieve poverty.
Kiva is a non-profit organisation with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Kiva allows individuals or institutions to lend as little as $25 to help create opportunities around the world. Grovelands has decided to do its bit by lending $250 to the cause, and so an already 10-member strong Kiva committee has been formed.
The Kiva team had an informative and productive meeting yesterday afternoon, with a view to deciding which projects to fund. Each member presented a case for two projects they had chosen from their allocated area of the world. There were then five rounds of democratic voting, which ended up with a shortlist of five projects.
Then there were problems…
It would appear that some of these loans get funded extremely quickly – two of the top five had been fully funded overnight! Luckily there was a “subs bench” from an initial shortlist of eight projects, but even one of these had already been funded.
However, after some substitutions, a final five projects were found, each of which will receive $50:
‘4 De Mayo Group’ from Paraguay – a group of eleven women, named after their street, who make a living selling milk and are requesting a loan for more supplies. http://www.kiva.org/lend/330250
Levon Meliksetyan from Armenia –a bee-keeper who sells his honey to make a living and support his son’s family. This was very popular with the committee due to the declining bee population.Levon needs the loan to expand his hive. http://www.kiva.org/lend/330593
Francis Njoroge Mwaura from Kenya – Francis used to work in farming but five years ago decided to follow his dream of becoming a photographer and set up a camera-man business – he needs the loan for more cameras and supplies. http://www.kiva.org/lend/328166
Santos Manuel from El Salvador – Santos has a truck and earns a living transporting construction supplies to his local community. His truck needs the transmission and axle repairing which is why he is requesting this loan. http://www.kiva.org/lend/327828
Diab from Lebanon – Diab has been working in construction for over 20 years and wants to improve his family’s standard of living. To do so he is requesting a loan to buy construction supplies for a new project he is planning. http://www.kiva.org/lend/330961
There may also be a chance for everyone at Grovelands to get involved in the Kiva project, as a departmental monthly incentive. The winning team could choose which part of the world the next bit of funding will go to – watch this space!
